Yesterday I completed a therapeutic yoga teacher training course with Alexa Kho-Hinkson and I couldn't be more excited to share my new learnings with you! Thank you Alexa for putting together such a great course.
So what is therapeutic yoga all about?.....
Firstly, "the word 'yoga' comes from the sanskit word meaning 'union' and it symbolises the harmonisation of the body with the mind" (1).
Whilst therapeutic yoga has a new name, we can in fact go back centuries and as far as 1888 when T.Krishnamacharaya (the Father of modern yoga) pioneered yoga to the modern world. It is thought that most of yoga taught today comes from this great guru. He developed yoga practices to help individuals with specific needs such as improving mental clarity, spiritual growth and to improve health concerns. Therapeutic yoga is a practice involving:
- Breath control (pranayama)
- Physical movements (asanas)
- Meditation (dhyana)
- Relaxation techniques
It can be treated alongside Ayurvedic practices; a holistic system of medicine that is indigenous to and is practised widely in India. "Ayurveda helps the healthy person to maintain health and the diseased person to regain health" (2). Through understanding each person's individual constitution, Ayurveda teaches us to eat a sound diet and live a stable healthy routine suitable for the individual.
All of these practises combined help to harness the body's natural healing powers.
"Every one of us has a healing force or power within us. This innate power is constantly battling inside our bodies against the factors that can make us unhealthy (such as stress, germs, excess alcohol, burning the candle at both ends). Therapeutic yoga helps to create a perfect feeling of wellbeing and when the body feels good and energetic, it stimulates the body to prevent and cure illness. In fact, no other form of exercise has such a remarkable effect on the body's natural healing powers." (3)
So why not come and experience this for yourself at my Monday night vinyasa flow class, St Andrews Church hall, Hertford, 7.30-8.30pm. I am also offering one-on-one or small group sessions to specifically tailor the class to meet your needs, whether it be to reduce stress or anxiety, build energy levels, improve breathing or to help improve conditions of auto-immune diseases. These classes would involve gentle hands on adjusting to promote correct alignment and release fascia and muscle tension. Therapeutic yoga will help to improve overall health and wellness and will leave you feeling totally relaxed and in balance.
